St. Paul’s United Church

Community Outreach

Benevolent Fund

Helping others is part of our call as Christians.  St. Paul’s has a fund to assist those in need.  It may be food, housing, or other needs.  We also work closely with the Salvation Army Food Bank and with the Guest House. This fund if sustained by targeted donations throughout the  year plus the Christmas Eve collections go to this fund.

Guest House Meal Program

A group of volunteers has met to put together some ideas for the Guesthouse meal preparation that will be happening the second Wednesday of every month starting on January 10, 2024.

Canadian Foodgrains Bank

Our Foodgrains Campaign wended November 16th, 2023. We have raised a total of $7,041. Another $2,500 will be added to this using our Trust Funds, bringing our St. Paul’s total to $9,541. Our donations are then matched 4:1 by the Canadian Government. Do the math and you can see St. Paul’s does make a difference on the world scene.  The need is great but our pebble in the puddle will ripple and make a difference.

Christmas Hampers

Posted November 17, 2022

St. Paul’s was asked many years ago by the Salvation Army to take on the responsibility of working with Beausoleil First Nations on Christian Island to provide Christmas hampers for those in need of assistance. For over twenty years now this has been an annual project.  We did get notice from Beausoleil Fist Nations that this program is not needed at this time.  This is a good thing, blessings to all that have been involved with this program over the years. Now ideas for another Outreach to focus on.

Refugees

Working with St. Mark’s Anglican Lutheran Church and AURA (Anglican United Refugee Alliance), St. Paul’s is currently sponsoring two refugees family.  One is a Syrian family of ten currently stuck in Turkey, the other is an Afghanistan family who just recently fled the country.  As of 19 November – we can report that the first step in the approval of our Refugee application for our family from Afghanistan has been met. St. Paul’s, along with the Sedaquat family, have been approved as having met the requirements to sponsor this family. We now proceed to the next step which is that the Afghanistan family themselves will be interviewed to see if they meet the eligibility requirements of the Canadian Government to be brought here as refugees. Sponsoring refugees is always a long process, but we are delighted to know that our application has been received, and the first step approved, which is good news indeed. We will continue to keep you informed as we learn more.

Monday Drop In-Tuesday Soup Kitchen

Due to the pandemic, this Monday morning drop-in breakfast program is on hold until further notice.  When it starts up again, breakfast is provided, free of charge, for anyone who would appreciate coming out of the cold and having breakfast and a chance to socialize with others. We have had this program for over thirty years.  We do need a facilitator for this program so that it can come alive again.

In 2024, we welcome the Gift of Grace Soup Kitchen, which is an outreach project out of Knox Presbyterian Church. As Knox has sold their building and are moving to another smaller location, the soup kitchen is now going to be serving a lunch every Tuesday at St. Paul’s. This is one more example of how churches can work together as we seek to meet the needs of others as part of our faith. For years, our U.C.W. provided the meals for the soup kitchen in the month of August and some of our own parishioners are volunteers are there. We hope that their guests also feel welcomed by St. Paul’s as well
